1. Folding chess was a creation of a priest who was not allowed to play chess. He made the folding chess board to make it look like two books kept together.
2. ‘Check mate’ is derived from a Persian word ‘shah’ and ‘maat’. The meaning of these words is King cannot be saved now and he is defeated.
3. It is very astonishing that total number of chess games possible in this world is 10^120. This figure is even more than the total number of electrons in this universe.
4. Earlier, chess was played only by kings, so it was considered as a game of upper class and noble people.

I like the second quote the mosts. Because in my native language "Check mate " is also pronounced "shah maat" and it is written "sah mat". I didn't known that Romanian has words that derive from the Ancient Persian. Also I think that chess was played only by kinks because it was a good way to discover new stategies to go to war.
ReplyDeleteVery useful article, I like the points two and three and the banipenet comment is really interesting.
ReplyDeleteBut, CHESS WAS PLAYED ONLY BY KINGS? Wow, that shocked me.
Maybe banipenet haves reason when he says that it can be a good way to discover new strategies for war; also it can be a brain training exercise.
It’s really funny but worth thinking about that. Also there are some other facts about that the powers were named, like king, queen, knight, rook, bishop on the basis of the wars during the olden days. I think since the game itself portraits the wars and so it was named like that. Mostly the terms where coined by the Arabic’s with their power and abilities.
