SCANDINAVIAN DEFENCE

1. e4 d5, usually followed by
2. exd5 Qxd5
3. Nc3 Qa5

The main idea for Black in most of the semi open games is to play d7-d5. Here it is played immediately for the price of an extra move with the queen after 3.Nc3Long disparaged as the epitome of weak play "because moving the queen early wastes time," it was resurrected in the 1990s with a pawn move c7-c6, allowing the queen to retreat from a5 to c7 when necessary. Now it is considered an attempt to reduce White's central pressure, and is popular among club players because White suddenly has to demonstrate some sophistication.

  1. This method of defense is really old but for a period of time it was forgoten. It is true that it is not really easy to remember and to use, but it is really efective. In the last several years I have seen many players that used this method to defend and the it helped them to win the game.

  2. Many players think that this move would lead to a critical situation of exposing the queen for opponent’s direct attack and therefore this move was not used a lot in the olden times. Then, a preventive measure is taken by which the queen can be prevented to show off by pawn, it also gave the queen a chance to come out of danger at some critical status.
