Polish Staunton Chess Set in Sheesham Wood

Chess sets are supposed to embody the warrior spirit of the game. Hence, chess pieces are supposed to either display manliness or the grace and fierceness of the warrior. This set does is simply the opposite. It does not exude even the basic qualities of a fighting knight. This set portrays its knights in a somewhat academic look at first impression. The knights seem be wearing spectacles at first glance and their narrowed chests deviate, in a rather significant degree, to a usually more manly portrayal of the fighting knights in many chess sets. The other pieces are no better. Their slender, minimalist designs give the feeling of a pathetic formation of units in battle. This set is perfect for geeks!

Play chess with my dad, my little sister, or my little brother?

(By Caroline Turner - 9 yrs Old)

I would rather play chess with my dad than my brother, as my brother doesn't follow the rules correctly. But he is fun to play with sometimes. Sometimes I think maybe my dad lets me win, so I say, “don't let me win, play properly.” But I normally win anyway. My brother always wins, he just takes pieces randomly, and I'm supposed to as well. So it can be a little fun, but sometimes I'd rather play with my dad. I play with my sister as well, occasionally. She doesn't know how to play either. She can play a little, so I play chess with her sometimes, but mostly with my dad.

Classic Staunton Double Weighted Chess Set

A good professional chess set should feature style, beauty, and functionality. The Classic Staunton Double Weighted Chess Set can give you all of them. The handcrafted pieces are made from high quality Chidar and Sheesam wood. These are the favorite material of most chess carvers because of their density and alternating highlights of dark and light. The hair strands of the knights are well-executed, giving them grace and beauty at the same time. Any chess lover can easily fall in love with this set. The vibrant look of the knight adds a lively dimension to the game. This set is perfect for both amateurs and professionals alike.

Concave Staunton Chess Set

As good as its name may sound, this chess set is not exactly a work of art. A good chess piece connoisseur will find the overall design inferior. Even the knights, pieces that normally have more intricate decorations, are given few brushes of carvings here and there to simply distinguish it from other chess pieces. The knight at first impression does not even look a horse; it looks like a dog sans the eyes! While the materials used are good (chidar and sheesham), the craftsmanship is found wanting, giving each piece a mediocre look--definitely not a chess set worth having. Go for a slightly priced set that can give both quality and style.

M6009 American Staunton in Sheesham and Boxwood

While this set is a nice one in itself, it has nothing new to offer for those looking for novelty in chess sets of pieces. The sheesham and boxwood pieces are carved in ordinary fashion. The only good thing about this set is the harmony of colors between the two sides. The rich cream color of white pieces is in perfect blend with the dark brown color of the black side. Each piece has a felt-lined base, giving an impression as if they are floating on the board. The king stands at 3.75 inches making it a commanding piece on the board. Aside from this mundane features, the American Staunton in Sheesham and Boxwood is just one of the chess sets you will encounter everyday.

M2041 The Moore Contemporary Chess Set

This set was not named contemporary without reason. The Moore Contemporary Chess Set is a perfect example of how far you can deviate from conventions without actually improving the traditional look of chess pieces. The poor attempt to integrate contemporary styles to chess making does not do justice to the wonderful traditional chess pieces that has survived for several centuries. This set is not even worth buying. It is a mediocre rendition of contemporary style. The pieces look like the common depictions of ETs in most movies to date. The Moore Contemporary Chess Set can be good gift to your alien pal if he visits you, but never for earthlings.

ST2002 Sherlock Holmes Chess Pieces

Themed chess sets are usually too boring or too interesting, with nothing in between. Clearly, this set borders on the interesting side. With so many variations in chess sets to date, it is no longer a challenge to find what is it that can help you show the uniqueness in you. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes, then there is nothing else that you can look for in this set. Each piece is very well-decorated and features the physical characteristics of the figures they were patterned after. Even the pawns received an excessive amount of ornamentation normally lacking in normal chess sets. It is simply a well-done set.

M2031 Very Large Philippino - 6 inch King Chess Set

I am not normally comfortable playing with overly big chess pieces, especially the kings. I personally prefer shorter but fully decorated pieces, but with this set I can forget my preference for a while. The reason why I like smaller pieces is that they are usually well furnished with good decorations or are just simply fun to look at. The Very Large Philippino - 6 inch King Chess Set is not only well-decorated for me, but is also shows handsome simplicity I rarely find in bigger pieces. Each piece of this set perfectly complements each other on the board. Both sides present a wonderful team making me forget that they are meant to battle each other endlessly.

Chess Champion 4.5 inch King Staunton Chess Set

Aside from the bigger size of chess pieces, this set can be rated quite easily since there is nothing much to look for. While not exactly mediocre, the pieces should have been given more details to capitalize on the size of each piece. While the king stands at 4.5 inches with a 1.8 inch base, it simply looks ordinary enough. The knights' design is simple given the fact that they are supposed to receive most decorations in the set. The only good thing about this though is its perfect triple weighted base. You will be assured that height will not be a factor in moving the pieces around because of the weight.

How my little brother plays chess.

I am 9 years old. My dad loves chess. I love chess. My little brother seems to like chess, but its no fun playing him as he doesn't play properly. He calls the pawns pom-poms! And he always cheats and ends up winning because he moves the pieces however he wants. When he was younger, as soon as he could, he picked up the king and said "I won!" Although I tell him that the knights moves in an L shape and that the bishop moves diagonally, he doesn't listen and he then moves the pieces however he wants. He always says I'm playing the game wrong! I want to try to teach him to play chess properly and I'm sure he'll start playing chess correctly eventually.

Why does chess have a geeky reputation?

Most do not see chess as a game for geeks only. There are excellent chess players who build muscles of their body to better improve the muscles of the brain. From grandmasters to simple players, chess is simply the most amusing, inexpensive source of true fun for them. The misconception might be coming from the nature of the game itself. Chess is a game of logic and strategy. It requires concentration for several minutes to hours just to finish a game. The people who hold the view that this game is for geeks does not really know chess at all except, maybe, the basics. Their inability to grasp the strategies and tactics involved push them to associate the game with geeks. That is the most lame of excuse they can come up with to excuse themselves from playing it.

Why more kids should play chess and less should watch TV, by Caroline Turner.

Chess is more exciting than watching TV. TV rots your brain and with chess you are actually doing something and thinking for yourself. I'm a 9 year old girl and I find that playing a game of chess is much more satisfying than watching TV or playing on the computer. Chess helps you think and concentrate. It helps you solve problems and it helps you with your school work systemically rather than looking for inspiration. Once my little brother and sister can play chess (they are only 6 and 8), we will be able to play chess on long car journeys and even chess tournaments which will make the car journeys seem quicker.

If I play chess will the girl in the chess club like me?

If you like that girl in the chessclub don’t try joining the club and trying to act like a Disney hero who wins his ladylove by turning into a math genius cum basket ball champ. Because life is not a movie, loser! You just have to be content either by giving up all hopes of ever going on a date with that girl or just play chess for own interest. Though you could join the chess club and learn the game-if lose out on her, you can still be proud of yourself for learning a marvelous game like that of chess.

Well relax, buddy just a thought…why not you ask her out, while competing for a game in gestures. The trainer might throw you out of the class but the girl just might appreciate your effort and plan to accept your proposal! But dude get real, a girl in a chessclub most often will be very smart and will definitely have her priorities set right. So if you think you are already smart, cute and gifted enough and you just need that chess club tag on you to impress her then go on…who’s stopping you? I you are not then be very careful it will be awe fully embarrassing to get you’re a** kicked in front a whole bunch of chess club members.

How long can a normal chess game last?

Chess, is an excellent game as long as you be patient enough to wait till the game is over, well many aren’t.Thus chess is clearly not for people who are not enthusiastic enough. Chess played with white pieces and black ones (a much known fact!)is played on a square checkered board, which is the chessboard, with sixty four square arranged in an eight-by-eight grid.

As an interesting fact the longest chessgame lasted for five days!!! Just imagine! Thus was invented the chess clock. Chess clocks usually ensure that a game does not go on forever. Although it might be a little difficult to understand or handle achess clock, (sometimes even professionals are baffled by it!) it is a must have for the proper completion a normal chess game. These Chess clocks again, need some amount of understanding. First up, is to know about some chess clock related chess terms like; increment, flag, 40\2,Bronstein, time-delay, analog, etc.

Increment: it is a time setting, which, adds to your time that remains after you have made your move. One of the most popular time settings was the recent FIDE’s G\90+30, which meant completion of the game in 90 minutes with a 30 minutes increment after every move.

Bronstein:It is quite similar to time-delay except adds back the time after the clock is hit instead of initially waiting for it. Though it proves to be pretty confusing at times!

Delay: is the amount of time for which the clock will freeze for before beginning the countdown.
No matter how long a game may last, playing chess, is always a pleasurable experience, just make sure you don’t grow old finishing just one game!

What is best for a child’s development-chess or video games?

One would definitely be biased towards playing a fast, gripping, bombastic video game with enthralling special effects and top-notch graphic designing. But that would the choice of an immature teen or a young adult indulging in it, during his\her free time. A normal video game however much exciting has numerous cons to it in comparison to a game of chess. From the simple reason that it is bound to spoil your eyesight to making you a dumb idiot confined between the four walls of your video game there are ample hints as to why you shouldn’t go buy that copy of the latest game your friend or neighbour is egging you to.

A. Hint no.1 would be though it improves your hand-eye coordination if played for too long could cause repetitive strain injury.

B. Some games are educational, and often have mythological connections and could be educational. Such as the media house Anime, has pulled a lot of stories from history, mythology and science. However it has to be mentioned that Anime has been far to often incorporate their games with adult-oriented content, which is not suitable for young viewers.

C. Last but not the least it hint no.3 would video games could, by which I mean the flickering lights and extreme special effects in it, give one epileptic seizures.
Chess on the other hand, is a game which gives you great strength of mind, enhances your patience to a great deal and makes you much brighter person with awesome thinking ability. Adding to that it boosts your self-confidence and self-esteem sharpening your abstract reasoning plus your memory. So why expose your self to such dangers and why not indulge yourself into something completely educational, which sharpens your mind, makes you, smart and popular-something like chess?

Why chessmen are best weighted

Chessmen are the trickiest among the sportsmen but at the same time ethical too. They always emerge as the brightest person in the society. Other games provide options to recover from the error committed but any error in the game of chess is highly payable. So chessmen were to made concentrate in the game with full pledge. It increases their concentration power; it will make them glow better over their outdoor competitors. In the case of other sports the players shine in the national team they play or in the club. The credit goes to the team first. In case of chess the player is given the full pride and even in case of teamwork the calculation of contribution of a single player is easy here.

The pride, sponsors and everything gets focused towards an individual who played the game and bidding over that individual increases. The chessmen are highly respected over the other sportsmen because of the talent they possess and the reputation of the game in the course of years. The respect over the game by the people gets increased day by day and every mother takes chess players as an example of brainy people. They insist their kids to follow the players and suggest them as the role models. This shows the charisma the masters possess among the kids.

Chessmen have their functioning rate of the memory increased due to their involvement in the game. The game pulls out the intelligence in the players and they shine the world with pride acquired through the game. Even in case of awarding to the sportsmen achieving individually matters more and the chances are automatically increased for the chessmen. Their representation for the nation is considered as the best. It is not that the other games are easy to play but the quality produced in playing the game is more important. Chess plays a vital role in doing the same and chessmen are the quality players for their execution. This perfection makes the chessmen best weighed among the sportsmen.

The Benefits of Chess Training

At just fourteen years old, Orrin Hudson was headed down a trail went by countless young black men in his neighborhood. In the Birmingham, Alabama, housing project he called home--along with 12 siblings-Hudson cured his teenager boredom by taking and selling inner tubes. There weren't many outlets in his community and even less people who cared about yet one more black male meant to go into the penal system. That was, till Hudson met James Edge, a white English teacher in his all black high-school. "He explained to me that each action has an effect. He then taught me the game of life through chess," recounted Hudson. "I was voted most responsible to achieve success and amazing student in my senior year. On graduation, I received a chess book from Mr. Edge. The turning point in my life was when I learned that no-one was coming to my rescue. Chess taught me that for my game to boost, I had to get better and for my life to get better I want to get better."

After highschool, Hudson served in the Air Force, worked as an Alabama state infantryman, and for a short time, owned Hudson's car Sales. But the relationship he developed with his prior teacher galvanized him to reach out to younger folk. He remembered how playing chess let him and his coach to form a life-altering bond. So, fitted out with faith and his savings of $20,000, Hudson set up Be Someone Inc. (www.besomeone.org ). "I selected chess to enfranchise youth to make good decisions. There, they're taught that each move counts, whether positive or negative.

It is critical for me to be certain they make a positive move," claims Hudson, Birmingham's 1999 and 2,000 citywide chess champion.

"Chess teaches you that planning, info, viewpoint, abilities, and persistence all have special worth to the successful person." Hudson builds interest in his organization, which was set up in 2001, by hosting chess events at churches, shopping colonnades, and varsities in bankrupt and well off communities in metro Atlanta and national. He oversees a staff of 30 volunteers. According to Georgia trick cycle rider Irma Best, fresh methods to reach kids have a durable impact. "It's especially crucial to show bankrupt kids to other segments of society, help increase their self-worth, and expand their world view." For John Alexander, eleven, a student at Wynbrooke junior school in Stone Mountain, Georgia, playing chess with Hudson is challenging him to be a critical thinker in systems his school can't. "He teaches me the game of life through chess," says the 6th grader. "He taught me that you've got to work with other folks like the pieces to a chess game.

You need to go through teachers to get an education, work with instructors to get a degree, and work with bosses to get a job.".

What does checkmate mean?

A chess game consists of controlling the movement of sixteen pieces each by the two players. These sixteen pieces consists of one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. The ultimate aim of the game is to checkmate the king of the opponent player.

The word checkmate comes from the Farsi language spoken Iran and Afghanistan. The phrase from the language goes as SHAH-K-MATE which means ‘the king is dead’. The word SHAH means ‘king’ and the word MATE has its root from English word ‘murder and Spanish word ‘matador’.

Check mate is a situation in which the king of a player is under attack by one or two pieces of opponent player. The game ends once the king is met with a check.

If the king is under attack but can escape the attack then it is said as check. When there are no moves to escape the attack and cannot avoid being captured then the situation is said as check mate. When any move taken may lead to a check for king this situation is known as stale mate and the game is a draw.

Checkmate can occur at any stage of the game, at the starting phase with few moves (it is known as fool’s mate), in the middle or at the end with only few pieces left on the board.
Two powerful pieces which can checkmate are the queen and the rook. Here one piece moves the king to the edge while the other piece checks the king.

Check mating with the queen is easiest and it takes at most ten steps to achieve. Checkmating with rook is another easiest method and occurs frequently. Checkmating with a bishop and knight is difficult to achieve and occurs less often. Checkmate with two bishops is common comparatively easier to that of a bishop and knights check mate.

How can I justify playing chess so much?

In the competitive world, sports became an important source of competition to distinguish people from each other. Being indulged in a world class event is always a priced possession to anyone. Chess is not just a game of entertainment alone and it allows our mind to get focused or we can consider itself as a source of skills. Taking rest doesn’t means lying simply, it really matters how we are relieving the stress on our mind. Viewing the chess played by someone else is the best way to get relief. Playing with right spirit is more vital in emphasizing relief. Chess is the game that tests our patience and helps in handling critical situations.

Chess is more advantageous than any other game in the world. Playing a game like this often doesn’t makes you lose anything. In fact you go on to win a number of characteristic which would simply be a dream to you if not for this game. It only brightens you and makes you shine in the competition. Playing chess often improves your focusing power and facilitates visualization which is an important attribute of budding designers. It enables us to think ahead and abstractly. It develops independence among children and individuals. It is the game that helps us analyze actions. It provides fun with motivation to the lovers. It is not the game of discouraging as the players are courage enough to be competitive.

It also tests our patience in protecting ourselves as we resemble the king in the chessboard. These ideas can be used in ones real life too. We can find solutions to the toughest problems by making use of the strategies which we used in this game.
The game makes it possible. We can’t be blamed for playing chess often as we are focused to Independent development and rationalized thinking.

Famous Chess Players…

Throughout the many years that people have played chess, there have been some awesome players within the competitions of their legions.  From Bobby Fischer, Paul Morphy, and Garry Kasparov, they all have their very on style, personality, and story when it comes to a game of chess.

If you are a person that is interest in the game of chess, you should check out these famous people and their wonderful stories about their experiences with chess!  Once you read about all these famous chess competitors you might realize that they have something in common like yourself.  Hopefully it will be that you all love to play a game of chess!

“God Save The Queen” an old saying..

Just like the old saying “God Save The Queen” it does not apply to the game of chess.  Many people tend to argue that by keeping your queen is the difference between winning the game or losing, there are other people no matter what you try to keep it is all about sacrifices no matter if they are painful.  People that are playing a game of chess try to help protect their queen throughout the whole game and never try to protect any others.  This could lead to a down fall within your game if you become over protective of your queen during the game!

Chess Offense or Defense?

Are you on offense or defense during your game of chess?

If you have become a beginner with the fun filled game of chess there is a lot that you will need to understand.  The first thing that you will want to comprehend is when you are being attacked or when you need to defend.  Several players that are new to the game quickly tend to be on offense and try to look for a fast way to defend their opponent.  However, this is a bad decision when it comes to a game of chess.   You want to think of the game of chess as a game of war, where you are trying to defend your king, along with your army.

Are you double pawns?

When you have double pawns that tends to lead to a weak game.  Double pawns is generally known when you have two pawns that are directly in front of each other.  This will result in an early capture.  Not only does it result in an early capture, but the double pawns will become the isolated pawns.  This means that your pawns will not be able to be defended by other pawns nor will the be able to guard.  So, if you have two pawns on the game board that are in the a vertical file and do not have the ability to have a guard with one another, then this major weakness will begin to haunt you towards the end of the game!

3 Kinds of Draws

Most people tend to think that stalemates are the only draws that can be made during the game of chess; however, it is not.  It is the most commonly used, but not the only.  There are two other kinds of draws such as the three fold repetition or the fifty move rule.  If you are wanting to win the game you will want to try to avoid the draws and use checkmate!

Stalemates are known as it being your opponent’s turn and they do not have any legal moves that can be made except, the king and it is illegal for the king to check its self. If this is the case neither will win this game.

The three fold repetition is when a same position is played three times during that game then, either one of the players are able to claim on a draw.

Last but not least the fifty move rule within the fifty consecutive moves there is no movements with the pawns, and there are no captures.

Be sure that you try and avoid all these draws, so that you can win the game!

Private Chess Lesson Really Worth Your Money?

Are you a  person that is interested in learning chess or are you already a beginner that is wanting to learn more about the game of chess?  If so you should consider hiring a personal chess trainers.  It could become a very useful.  A chess trainer can help you to get the feel of the game, along with all the crafty lessons that you will want to know.  To find the best trainer you might want to ask others that are playing at clubs or tournaments if they recommend anyone to be an awesome trainer.  If you search online you should be able to find a teacher that gives online lessons for a low rate also.

Computerized Chess

Are you considering playing a game of chess, but can not decide you are wanting to just purchase the computerized game board or play online.  Playing a game of chess on the computer will make it easier for you to notice what is happening.  The computerized chess boards are a different experience compared to a regular chess boards.   Computerized chess boards have been around for a long time.  They where actually on the market before the computer was actually built.  However, they did not come to life until after the digital computers.  There are various different types of computerized chess boards you will just have to find the one that you really like!

The Weakest Link…

Are you the weakest link in chess?  I would hope not, but in the game of chess there are a piece called the pawn.  It is considered one of the weakest links.  The pawn is limited to their own movements.  You are only allowed to move the pawn piece in a forward movement, it can not be moved backwards.  So, be sure when you move your pawn piece that you are moving it in the direction that you are wanting it to be moved in.  So is your pawn piece one of the weakest link during your game of chess?

The Queen has entered the room…

In a game of chess the queen has been considered the most powerful and awesome piece in the game.  The options that you have with the Queen are almost unlimited!  You are capable of moving in any direction vertically, horizontally, diagonally, whichever direction you prefer with your queen piece.  Not only can you her in any direction, but you can also move to as many squares as you would prefer.   So, just remember in your game of chess the that the queen is capable of almost everything possible, so make sure you are keeping your eyes out for the best move that she is capable of allowing you to make!
